Letter

Scope and Content

Whitworth has 'read with great pleasure' Tennent's 'admirable reply, which, coupled with our success, will I think silence the Clique'. He suggests that 'It will be desirable for you to refer, as much as will be prudent, to the great superiority, already proved, of our gun over both of Armstrongs, both as regards range, accuracy and endurance'.

The subject is possibly the letter from 'T.' [Tennent] to the editor of The Times, supporting Whitworth, dated 13 July 1864, and published in the newspaper the following day.

Postscript: 'Luce's report last night, - all right.'

Dated at 28 Pall Mall, SW [London].
