Miscellaneous Letters

Scope and Content

Miscellaneous letters from various correspondents addressed, with few exceptions, to Marion Harry Spielmann. They are arranged in alphabetical order of writers. Most of the correspondents are artists. Amongst the larger groupings are:

  • Helen Allingham (numbers 10-15, 1889-99);
  • Lawrence Alma-Tadema (numbers 16-24, 1889-1903);
  • John Bacon (numbers 28-36, 1891-1913);
  • George Clausen (numbers 95-103, 1889-1911);
  • Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant, French painter (numbers 110-127, 129-130, (1886-1902); number 128 from Catherine Jeanne Arago (‘Jeanne’), Benjamin-Constant’s wife (8 July 1902); number 590, from J. Murray Templeton (1887), includes a lengthy account of Benjamin-Constant and his paintings); number 131 Catalogue for Exhibition of Pictures by Benjamin-Constant and Marchioness of Granby, The Grafton Galleries Summer Exhibition 1902.
  • Harry Furniss (numbers 198-258, 1888-c 1891, some with sketches);

  • Maarten Maartens (numbers 386-401,1894-1914, to Mr and Mrs [Mabel Henrietta] Spielmann);

  • Phil May (numbers 431-440, many undated);
  • Val Prinsep (numbers 477-487, 1894-c 1904);
  • Briton Riviere (numbers 500-517, 1892-1904);
  • E. Temple Thurston (numbers 605-620, 1905-9).
 Also occurring are Max Beerbohm, Sir (Thomas Henry) Hall Caine, Marie Corelli (pseudonym of Mary Mackay), Sir Charles Lock Eastlake, Kate Greenaway, Georgina Hogarth, William James Linton, Sir John Everett Millais, William Morris, Arthur Rackham, Arthur Severn, George Bernard Shaw, Walter Sickert, James Abbott McNeill Whistler and Thomas Woolner. Numbers 539-543 relate to the Dante Gabriel Rossetti Memorial in London and are from its designer John Pollard Seddon (1886).
