Scope and Content

Notes of lectures given by Samuel Argent Bardsley taken by an unknown student. The title page reads 'Notes from the lectures on the Practice of Physic by Dr S.L. Bardsley at The Royal School of Medicine & Surgery Pine St. Manchester. Session 1836&7-8-9, Vol 2nd'. The label of S. Boardman, stationer, printer & bookseller of St Ann's Street, Manchester (fl. 1821-1847) can be found in the inside front cover. There is an attempt at an index in pencil on the inside back cover. The folios are numbered 1-262 from folio 3 onwards, with 212-262 being blank.

Some of the subjects covered in the lecture notes include the dura mater, apoplexy [stroke], cynanche or quinsy [peritonsillar abscess], cynanche tonsillaris [pharyngitis], angina membranacea, cancrum oris or noma, syphilitic sore throat, mercurial sore throat, cynanche trachealis or croup, cynanche laryngea, oedema of the glottis, spasm of the glottis, bronchial polypus, cynanche parotidae or the mumps, cynanche maligna, bronchocele, diseases of the chest, pneumonia, peripneumonia, percussion, auscultation, states of the respiration, states of the voice, states of the circulation, pleuritis [pleurisy], haemothorax, pneumothorax, bronchitis, chronic bronchitis, haemoptysis or haemorrhage from the lungs, phthisis [tuberculosis, pulmonary], and pertussis or whooping cough. In each case there is usually discussion involving a description of the diseases, causes, symptoms, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. There is evidence that two folios have been removed, one that was numbered 66 and the other 210, with the index indicating that 210 contained notes on oedema of the lungs.

The lecture notes are largely on the recto only throughout with some additional notes on the verso. This has led to the verso of some folios being used by another unknown writer who has penned part of a work of fiction on 8 of them. The work seems to be set around Liverpool and Blackpool with characters including Mr and Mrs Craggs, Belinda, and Captain Linstock.
