Correspondence relating to Hugh Cairns

Scope and Content

Papers relating to Hugh Cairns accumulated by Jefferson immediately after the death of Hugh Cairns in 1952 and in preparation for the Hugh Cairns Memorial Lecture which Jefferson gave in 1958. This lecture was published as 'Memories of Hugh Cairns', in Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, 1959, p. 155-166. See the previous series for a short biography of Hugh Cairns. This series contains not only correspondence, but also cuttings, offprints and photographs. There is correspondence between Barbara Cairns, the wife of Hugh, and both Geoffrey and Gertrude Jefferson. There is correspondence relating to research for Hugh Cairns Memorial Lecture, especially the role of Hugh Cairns in the development of the School of Medicine at Oxford. There is also a bundle of papers relating to Hugh Cairns' early life in Adelaide and a local memorial to him there.

Arrangement

This series was originally in the same file as the previous series, JEF/1/6/3. However, the content is very different and it seemed appropriate for the file to be divided into two series. Within the series, the original order of the file has been retained.
