Scope and Content

Letters from John Ruskin as follows:

  • (a) numbers 1-42 (1867-1875), letters to George Richardson, some with envelopes;
  • (b) numbers (n.d.), letter to William Richardson, M.D., father of the above-mentioned George and cousin of John Ruskin;
  • (c) numbers 44 (n.d.), letter to Mrs Richardson, wife of William and mother of George;
  • (d) numbers 45 (n.d.), letter to Nevil Story-Maskelyne, mineralogist;
  • (e) numbers 46-87 (1868-1876), letters to George Richardson, some with envelopes.
Also included are 19 additional envelopes (1861-1875) from Ruskin to George Richardson. In 1869 George Richardson was appointed by Ruskin to manage his financial affairs and the greater part of the letters relates to finance.

Acquisition Information

Numbers 1-45 were purchased by the John Rylands Library at auction at Sotheby's on 14 April 1959 (Lot 494). Numbers 46-87 were purchased at Sotheby's on 8 July 1959 (Lot 800).
