Material relating to Apollinaire to Aragon

Scope and Content

This series consists of typescripts, cuttings, pamphlets, journals and other publications, acquired by Strachan from various sources whilst researching and working on the translations which would appear in Apollinaire to Aragon, published in 1948. The material predominantly dates from wartime, and includes pieces by and relating to individual French poets (some of whom are represented in Apollinaire to Aragon), pieces by British writers about French poets and writers, and much material about French intellectual life during the occupation of France. A Resistance pamphlet (disguised by a cover purporting to be an abridged version of the novel Paul et Virginie) is included at WJS/8/9. Also included (at WJS/8/14/1) is an inscribed copy of Nancy Cunard's anthology, Poems for France; Strachan submitted a poem for possible inclusion in this anthology, and Cunard subsequently became a friend, encouraging Strachan in the translating work which led to Apollinaire to Aragon.
