Letters from Giuseppe Baretti

Scope and Content

Letters to HLP from Giuseppe Marc'Antonio Baretti. Baretti was an Italian writer and friend of Samuel Johnson, who had introduced him to the Thrale family. He was language tutor to Hester Maria Thrale (Queeney) from 1773 until 1776 when his relationship with HLP had become so tense that he abruptly left the house. Baretti wrote the dialogues Easy phraseology for the use of young ladies (1775) which was intended for Hester Maria Thrale.

In several instances notes in Italian addressed to Queeney have been added.
