The title page reads '"An Analytical Review of the published cases of ruptures of the uterus, vagina & bladder; stating the history & treatment - curative & preventative - of the accidents." A Thesis Offered by Messrs Radford & Partington to the students composing their first midwifery class in May 1837'. It is not obvious exactly who the author of the manuscript is but it is clear from the introduction and the conclusion that they are one of Radford & Partington's students.

The content is set out as follows:

  • An Analytical Review etc., ff.1-2
  • Section 1st, History of ruptures of the uterus, vagina & bladder, ff.3-60
  • Section 2nd, Morbid appearances found on dissection after rupture of the uterus, vagina & bladder, ff.61-71
  • Section 3rd, Treatment of ruptures of the uterus, vagina & bladder, ff.72-122
  • Appendix, ff.123-133.

The appendix contains a table listing 64 separate cases in which the following information is given, type of case, age of female, number of pregnancy, period of gestation, time of occurrence, treatment, issue, state of pelvis, state of uterus, by whom & where related.

Inserted between folios 44 and 45 is a black and white drawing which 'represents a preparation in the Museum of St Bartholomew's Hospital of the uterus & vagina from the subject of Mr Birch's case'.

The manuscript bears the bookplate of the Radford Library which indicates that it was allocated the reference Q 124 viz. their 1877 catalogue.
