The same text features in the manuscript twice, firstly in Latin on ff.1-16 and secondly in English on ff.17-34, followed by a copy of a letter.
The title is given as 'Excerptum totius Italicae nec non Helveticae Literaturae Pro Anno MDCCLIX Tomus III Julius Augustus Septembris Bernae Literaria Solvente Societate' or 'An abstract of the whole Italic and Helvetic Literature for the year 1759, volume third, July August September, Bern, printed at the charges of the Literary Society'.
The English version is introduced thus: 'A medico-literary controversy betwixt the most famous John Andrew Moneglia and Bernardine Ramazzini on account of the delivery and death of the wife of Martelline Bagnesi etc. to which is added a dissertation of the famous Joseph Ramazzinus, Public Professor of Physic and great grandson of the celebrated Bernardine Ramazzini concerning the dangerous method of extracting the secundines from the womb by hand etc. Printed by the Heirs of Bartholomew Solian, 1358'. The text was originally published in The medical museum: or, A repository of cases, experiments, researches, and discoveries, collected at home and abroad. ... By gentlemen of the faculty, Volume 3, London: W. Richardson & S. Clarke, 1764, pp.185-200.
There is also, on ff.35-37, a copy of a letter from Dr Pringle to Sir Alexander Dick, President of the College of Physicians at Edinburgh in which he describes a number of cases of urinary tract infections successfully treated with uva ursi [Arctostaphylos uva ursi].
Inserted into the front of the manuscript are two draft letters from Dr Thomas Radford to the Editor of the London Medical Gazette in which Radford expresses his support of the use of galvanism in cases of uterine haemorrhage.
