Relations between the Union and University Committee Minutes

Scope and Content

The committee set up by Council in 1961 to consider general relations between the university and its students and in particular the relationship of the Union to the University. The Committee was established following the University' suppression of the Union-sponsored newspaper, News Bulletin in 1960, for publishing what the University authorities considered to be irresponsible journalism. The Committee was chaired by the chairman of Council, Sir Raymond Streat, and included the vice-chancellor, members of Council, academics and Union officials. The committee paid particular attention to the financing of the Union, and the minutes include details of Union accounts. The Committee also discussed wider issues of student amenities and welfare, and proposals for greater student involvement in University governance.
