Lectures on pathology delivered by Hieronymus David Gaubius (1705-1780) at the University of Leiden in 1763 taken down by Eberhard Gmelin.
An inscription on the inside front cover indicates that the manuscript was acquired by the Manchester Medical Society in March 1879 and that it was subsequently allocated the number GD 1144 viz. their 1890 library catalogue.
Eberhard Gmelin was born in Tübingen on 1 May 1751 and studied medicine there receiving his doctorate in 1769. He then continued his studies, firstly at the University of Leiden in 1769 and at the University of Vienna in 1770. Gmelin practised first in Feldkirch, Urach, and Freudenstadt before becoming city physician to Heilbronn in 1778. He was a strong advocate for mesmerism and his publications included Ueber den Thierischen Magnetismus; in einem brief (1787) and Neue Untersuchungen über den thierischen Magnetismus (1789). He died on 3 March 1809.
Hieronymus David Gaubius was born in Heidelberg in 1705 and studied medicine in Harderwijk and Leiden, where he received his doctorate in 1725. On the invitation of Boerhaave, Gaubius became lecturer in chemistry at Leiden in 1731 and full professor of medicine and chemistry in 1734. He succeeded Boerhaave to the Chairs of Medicine and Chemistry at Leiden and was one of the proponents of quantitative chemical analysis in medical science. One of his major publications was General Pathology: Institutiones Pathologiae Medicinalis (1758).
