Scope and Content

Notes from lectures on surgical anatomy given by Hubert von Luschka at the University of Tübingen during the winter of 1861/2 by Ed. Ott, a medical student. There is no attempt to divide the notes up into individual lectures, instead they offer a detailed anatomical description, beginning with the head on page one and during the course of the manuscript working down the body taking in the neck, shoulders, chest, abdomen, epigastric region, and the pelvis. Reference is made to the different bones, muscles, and organs in each region of the body, with reference to the arteries, veins, and nerves towards the end of the notes.

Inscriptions on the inside front cover indicate that the manuscript was acquired by the Manchester Medical Society in December 1878 and that it was subsequently allocated the reference GO 4708 viz. their 1890 library catalogue.

Administrative / Biographical History

Hubert von Luschka was born on 27 July 1820 in Konstanz, Germany. He first studied pharmacology at the universities of Freiburg and Heidelberg before studying medicine and receiving his doctorate from the University of Freiburg in 1845. Immediately he was appointed prosector in anatomy at the University of Tübingen where he spent the rest of his career. His lectures were popular with students and he made considerable contributions to the understanding of human anatomy and the nervous system and lends his name to a number of anatomical structures. He published widely during his career including Die Adergeflechte des menschlichen Gehirns (1855), Anatomie des Menschen in Rücksicht auf das Bedürfnis der praktischen Heilkunde (1862-9), and Die Lage der Bauchorgane (1873). Luschka was ennobled in 1865, received the degree of doctor honoris causa in 1874, and died on 1 March 1875 in Tübingen.
