Scope and Content

Manuscript copy of the lectures of Johann Gottfried Brendel (1712-1758) on the diseases of women and children seemingly taken largely from the published work of 1794 Praelectionem Academicarum de Cognoscendis et Curandis Morbis, Tomus Tertius, Morbos Singularum Partium, Luem Veneream, Nec Non Morbos Mulierum Infantum Complectens Edidit notasque adjecit Hermannus Wilhelmus Lindemann. The volume is divided into 13 distinct chapters, which are as follows:

  • Chapter 1 - De menstruorum obstructione/Obstruction of the menses - ff.1r-23r.
  • Chapter 2 - De menstruis perturbatis et nimiis/Diminished and excessive menses - ff.23r-30v.
  • Chapter 3 - De fluore albo/Of the fluor albus - ff.30v-41r.

Inscriptions in the inside front cover indicate that the manuscript was acquired by the Manchester Medical Society in December 1876 and allocated the reference GO 3481 viz. their 1890 library catalogue. There is an additional inscription on the flyleaf in German, possibly made by the manuscript's creator.

Administrative / Biographical History

Johann Gottfried Brendel (1712-1758) was born in Wittenberg on 23 February 1712 and studied medicine there, receiving his doctorate in 1736. In 1738 he was made professor extraordinary without any particular subject in Göttingen and in 1739 became professor in ordinary. He introduced the first practical clinical teaching in Göttingen in 1755. His publications include Opusculorum mathematici et medici argumenti (1766-75), Medicine legalis immersive Forensis (1788), and Praelectiones Academicae de cognoscendis et curandis morbis (1792-4). Brendel died in Göttingen on 17 January 1758.
