Scope and Content

Observations on the midwifery of Georg Wilhelm Stein (1737-1803) from the lectures of Johann Christoph Friedrich Voitus (1741-1787) given in Berlin. The notes, whilst taken from lectures given by Voitus, follow the structure of Stein's two manuals for midwifery, both published in 1783 and both of which were designed as lecture text books. The manuscript has the original pagination pp.1-293 and the notes on pp.1-169 follow the structure of Stein's first manual Theoretische Anleitung zur Geburtshülfe: zum Gebrauche der Vorlesungen with the introduction on pp.3-5 followed by section one (pp.6-16), section two (pp.17-54), section three (pp.54-94), and section four (pp.95-169). Those notes on pp.171-293, however, follow the structure and content of his second more practical manual, Practische Anleitung zur Geburtshülfe: zum Gebrauche der Vorlesungen. For this second set of notes the introduction covers pp.171-175 followed by section one (pp.176-202), section two (pp.203-230), section three (pp.231-244), and section four (pp.245-293) and the following three folios contain an index to the whole volume. There is a small sheet of loose notes on the embryo inserted between pages 116 & 117.

Inscriptions on the inside front cover indicate that the manuscript was acquired by the Manchester Medical Society in January 1873 and that it was subsequently allocated the reference GO 3555 viz. their 1890 library catalogue.
