Montgomery was born in Prestwich on 2 July 1930, the son of medical practitioner David Aitken Montgomery. He qualified in medicine at London in 1963. Specialising in anaesthetics, Montgomery held registrar appointments at Liverpool and Manchester before being appointed consultant anaesthetist to United Manchester Hospitals and clinical tutor in anaesthetics at the University of Manchester.
