Harold Hartley studied medicine at Owens College and received the MB ChB from Victoria University in 1897; in 1902 he was awarded the MD from London university. He worked at a number of hospitals in Manchester and Stoke on Trent, and was a surgeon at the North Staffordshire Infirmary.
