Malone-Barrett held resident appointments at Connaught Hospital, Walthamstowe, and Royal Hospital Wolverhampton, before settling in general practice in Rochdale. In 1963 he was bankrupt, which he blamed on inadequate payments to general practitioners under the NHS.
