Payne-Chadwick graduated in medicine from the University of Manchester in 1919 (MD 1922). Se held house appointments at St Mary's Hospitals, Manchester, the David Lewis Northern Hospital, Liverpool and Birmingham Fever Hospital, before working in general practice at Bollington Cross, Cheshire.
