Addison studied medicine at the universities of Cambridge and London (M.B., B.Chir. 1967). He did postgraduate work at Cambridge, receiving his Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1972. He was consultant chemical pathologist at MRI and Manchester Childrens Hospital Trust, and has been a honorary lecturer at the University of Manchester in child health and chemical pathology.
