Bowden was educated at the University of Manchester, qualifying in 1933. He was in practice in Warrington, where was a police surgeon and a fire brigade surgeon. He was chairman of the Warrington Division of the BMA in 1957-9, and president of its Merseyside branch in 1960-1. Bowden was a fellow of Manchester Medical Society . He was the son of Ernest Edward Bowden.
