After qualifying at Manchester, Austin was house surgeon at MRI. He was later a Major in the Royal Army Medical Corps specialising in anaesthesia. Austin was a fellow of Manchester Medical Society and a member of the Association of Industrial Medical Officers, the College of General Practitioners and the Manchester Medico-Legal Society.
