Barnish studied at MRI and Pine Street before being appointed house surgeon at Chorlton-upon-Medlock Dispensary. He later became RMO at St Mary's Hospital Manchester, MOH for Wigan Borough and honorary surgeon at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary and Dispensary, Wigan.
