Crompton studied at Owens College Manchester, taking his MB ChB in 1898, followed by his MD in 1903 and a DPH in 1906. After various house and resident posts at MRI and Ancoats Hospital Manchester, he became a medical officer at Lancashire County Asylum, Prestwich.
