After qualifying, Clegg held house positions at St Mary's Hospital Manchester and MRI where he was later surgical registrar. Clegg later worked as a general practitioner in Macclesfield with his wife Joan. Clegg was a fellow of Manchester Medical Society and a member of Manchester Pathological Society.
