Charlesworth studied at Middlesex before being appointed assistant medical officer at the General Hospital and Dispensary for Sick Children, Manchester. He later worked as a general practitioner in Hanley, Staffordshire. Charlesworth was a fellow of the Obstetrical Society of London.
