Greenhalgh received his medical education at the University of Manchester and was house surgeon and senior house surgeon to the Orthopaedic Unit at MRI. Greenhalgh served in the RAMC as an anaesthetic specialist before settling in general practice in Bramhall. He was a member of Manchester Medical Society .
