Barrow studied at the Manchester School from 1809 before being apprenticed to John Atkinson Ransome in 1815. He was a house surgeon at MRI from 1815 to 1816 and was practising as a surgeon in Manchester in 1825. Barrow was the secretary of the Manchester Natural History Society. He died on 31 July 1851.
