Garretts studied medicine at University College Hospital, London and qualified in 1950. He was a consultant dermatologist at United Manchester Hopsitals, Manchester and Salford Hospital for Diseases of the Skin and Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. Garretts was also a honorary lecturer in dermatology at the University of Manchester.
