Scope and Content

Correspondence with Aubrey William Waterfield (1874-1944), artist, relating to Waterfield's work as a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian in Florence, with discussion of articles, of the political situation in Italy, the lack of an independent press in Italy, and relations between Britain and Italy. Also included is reference to Waterfield's employment as a reviewer of books on the fascist movement for the paper. There is correspondence with Robert Calverley Trevelyan poet and translator, relating to the recommendation of Waterfield as a correspondent.

There is discussion of the censorship of telegrams sent and received by Waterfield, and articles on the dissolution of parliament and elections in Italy. Also included is discussion of a warning from Antonino Di Giorgio, army officer and politician, received by Lina Waterhouse, journalist and author, [wife of Waterhouse] that the Italian government disapprove of Waterfield's communications with the Manchester Guardian, and may take steps to ensure that they cease. There is a notice of the termination of Waterfield's work as a correspondent for the paper, owing to the employment of a permanent correspondent in Rome, and an expression of best wishes by Waterfield to Scott [on the occasion of his 80th birthday].
