Scope and Content

Correspondence with Hessel Duncan Hall (1891-1976), historian and public servant, relating to article by Duncan Hall on the Geneva protocol from the perspective of Australia, with discussion of the protocol, and regret that it is not ratified, and that no statement of explanation is provided on the subject by the Australian government. There is also discussion of Duncan Hall's concern of the lack of references to the Manchester Guardian which appear in the Australian press, with discussion of the Manchester Guardian's relationship with Sydney Daily Guardian and the Melbourne Herald, accompanied by an internal memorandum discussing the subject.

Also included is correspondence relating to articles by Duncan Hall on the Institute of Pacific Relations, their first meeting, and their views on issues in the Pacific, accompanied by an enquiry as to whether the articles will be published, and the information that the Manchester Guardian has not yet received them, accompanied by related internal memoranda. There is a request from Chas. F. Loomis, at the Institute of Pacific Relations, for articles by Duncan Hall on the Geneva protocol in the Manchester Guardian to be published as a pamphlet, and for the production of 400 copies for the institute.

There is also a request for contact information for Duncan Hall from Y.C. Li, at the Chinese Information Bureau, to discuss Duncan Hall's articles entitled 'Problems in the Pacific' in the Manchester Guardian. There is a letter of recommendation by Duncan Hall for [John Bell] Condliffe, economist, for the provision of articles on the politics and economy of New Zealand for the Manchester Guardian.

There is correspondence relating to the provision of an article on Australian politics by Duncan Hall, and reference to an increase in references to the Manchester Guardian in the Australian press.

GDN/A/H9/1 are excerpts of [Sir Thomas Rainsford] Bavin, attorney general, in Questions and Answers, which contains notes on Duncan Hall's recommendation of Bavin.

GDN/A/H9/10 is an address given by Duncan Hall entitled 'Cooperation of the Countries of the Pacific along Political and Legal lines', 1925.

GDN/A/H9/11 and 12 are copies of a report by Duncan Hall on the first meeting of the Institute of Pacific Relations, [1925].
