Scope and Content

Correspondence with Sir Harry Evan Auguste Cotton (1868-1939), politician, barrister and writer, relating to discussion of the situation in Assam, with relation to the conflict between [Sir Henry Cotton], Chief Commissioner of Assam] and the tea planters over labour, and a request by Scott to be kept informed of developments, which is accepted.

There is correspondence relating to a request by Cotton work employment by the Manchester Guardian, and proposal of himself as a potential correspondent on India, accompanied by internal memoranda discussing the subject. Also included is correspondence relating to thanks for a notice in the Manchester Guardian on Cotton's appointment as president of the Bengal Legislative Council in India, with reference to Cotton's enjoyment of his employment as a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian, and a request that Cotton's brother, A[lbert] L[ewis] Cotton, be considered as reviewer of books on India for the paper.
