Scope and Content

Correspondence with Bernard Temple, journalist and editor, relating to an offer by Temple of a weekly article from India for the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of the present situation in India, accompanied by a related internal memorandum. Also included is an offer by Temple of articles from Persia, which are accepted, with reference to the editorial stance of the paper on Persia. There is discussion of the provision of an article on Persia by Temple, and of the political situation in Persia, with reference to the Anglo-Russian convention, and a request from Scott for information on a suggested loan to Persia by Germany, which is provided.

There is also correspondence relating to Temple's credentials as a journalist, and the provision of references, prior to a meeting with Scott. There is a letter of recommendation for Temple from Edward S. Browne, orientalist, suggesting that Temple might be sent to Persia as a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian, and an explanation of the current arrangement for the provision of articles to the paper.
