Correspondence with Hewlett P. Johnson

Scope and Content

Correspondence with Hewlett Johnson (1874-1966), dean of Canterbury, relating to discussion of amendments to a letter to the editor by Johnson [discussing the need for the support of Neville Chamberlain, minister of health in the campaign] for smoke abatement, which is published in the Manchester Guardian. There is a request by Johnson that Scott attend the enthronement of [Guy Warman] as the Bishop of Manchester as a representative of the newspaper world, which is declined.

Also included is a request by Johnson that the Manchester Guardian publish an appeal to Manchester city council to work towards federation with surrounding townships for the provision of services for education, transport and poor relief; it is suggested by Scott that this might appear in the paper as a letter to the editor. There is also a request by Johnson that Scott write to the prime minister [Ramsay MacDonald] in support of a potential knighthood for Mathewson Watson, justice of the peace, alderman and magistrate, which is granted.
