Scope and Content

Correspondence between Granville Archer Hill, music critic, and E.T. Scott, W.P. Crozier and A.P. Wadsworth, relating to discussion of a complaint by R.J. Forbes, musician and principal of the Royal Northern College of Music, regarding a review by Hill of a performance by Willy Hess, musician and composer, which appeared in the Manchester Guardian, and the withdrawal of tickets to a subsequent performance. Also included is discussion of the tone of the article, and of Hill's view of the situation.

There is a statement of earnings for Hill for 1931-1934, and discussion of a request for a permanent position on the staff, with a salary, which is refused, and accompanied by related internal memoranda. There is also correspondence relating to a further request to be paid a formal salary, which is granted, and requests at intervals for increases in salary, which are granted, with discussion of the work carried out by Hill, the content of articles, and payments for a regular gramophone survey feature by Hill. Also included are internal memoranda discussing the subject. There is a notice of a period of illness for Hill, and good wishes for his recovery.

Also included is correspondence discussing Hill's retirement owing to ill health and of the potential employment of a deputy music critic, of continuing contributions for the paper by Hill on music broadcasts and gramophone records, and of Hill's pension entitlements. There is a letter of condolence from A.P. Wadsworth to Hill's sister, Rosa Hill, on his death.
