Correspondence with Sir John Reith

Scope and Content

Correspondence between John Charles Walsham Reith, first Baron Reith (1889-1971), first director-general of the BBC and W.P. Crozier, relating to praise and discussion of the coverage of [the coronation of King George VI] broadcast by the BBC, by Crozier, which is acknowledged with thanks, praise of the Manchester Guardian, and reference to the complimentary nature of broadcasting and responsible journalism.

Also included is discussion of a request by Crozier for assistance from Reith in attempting to secure dispensation or deferral for A.W. James, journalist, from military service [during the Second World War] owing to his value to the paper, which is granted, but with an explanation as to the procedures in place for deferrals, under which Reith suggests that success is unlikely.
