Correspondence with J.L Garvin

Scope and Content

Correspondence with James Louis Garvin (1868-1947), journalist and newspaper editor, relating to the provision of a photograph of Scott to Garvin, as a token of their friendship. Also included is correspondence relating to the employment of [Hugh] Massingham, [journalist and writer], at the Manchester Guardian, at Garvin's request, and discussion of Massingham's subsequent employment at The Observer, with thanks from Garvin for the training and assistance Massingham received at the Manchester Guardian, and expression of admiration for the paper. Also included is a response to an invitation to a dinner in honour of Garvin, which is declined, and discussion of the Labour party and Garvin's concerns relating to the present government and political situation.

There is correspondence between Garvin and W.P. Crozier, relating to congratulations on and discussion of Garvin's receipt of [the order of the Companions of Honour], and his refusal to accept previous honours which were not similarly awarded to Scott. Also included is correspondence relating to Garvin's thanks for the leader articles and letters published [on the end of his employment as editor of The Observer], his feelings on the subject, and arrangements for meetings between Garvin and Crozier, and discussion of Crozier's health.
