Correspondence with John Douglas Woodruff (1897-1978), journalist and wit, relating to the provision of specimens of work and details of previous experience by Woodruff, with a view to potential employment at the Manchester Guardian. Also included is reference to a meeting between Scott and Woodruff in Oxford, and an offer of a trial period of employment at the paper, which is declined, owing to the delay in Scott's decision, which led to Woodruff's acceptance of another offer of employment. There is a letter discussing Woodruff's suitability for employment at the paper from Arnold Joseph Toynbee, historian.
