Scope and Content

Correspondence with Sylvia E. Saunders Sprigge, journalist, relating to the printing of a letter from Lauro de Bosis, poet, in the Popolo di Roma in support of fascism and the fascist government, which coincides with de Bosis' privately printed liberal paper, as an attempt to discredit him, with discussion of the fascist regime in Italy, lecture tours given by de Bosis in America, and the need to ensure the safety of his family. There is discussion of the provision of an article on the subject by Saunders, and a copy of the article, 'A Soldier in Disguise, the case of Lauro de Bosis' is included. Also included are telegrams relating to the veracity of the story, and discussion of its potential publication in the Manchester Guardian.

There is discussion of use of descriptions of 'our correspondent' and 'our own correspondent' to describe journalists who contribute to the Manchester Guardian, with apologies for any inconvenience Saunders may have been given. There is also correspondence relating to the decision by the paper to no longer employ a staff correspondent in Italy.
