Schlapp was born in Edinburgh on 14 January 1898. He served in the first world war before entering Edinburgh University as a chemistry student. He then began his physiological research, investigating primary gland function. In 1930 Schlapp joined the physiology department of the University of Manchester as lecturer, and in 1946 he was elected to the Brackenbury Chair. His main contributions to the field of physiology where in cardiovascular and neuro-physiology. He was twice dean of the Medical Faculty, and was recognised for building up strong liaison between physiology and the clinical sciences. Schlapp was also dean of the Faculty of Music and played an important part in making chamber music accessible to the general Manchester public. Schlapp was pro-vice-chancellor of the University from 1957 to 1961. Schlapp was president of Manchester Medical Society in 1960. He died on 1 October 1966 on his way to attend a meeting of the Anglo-German Medical Society.
