Tennant gained his medical education in Edinburgh. He was senior surgeon in Penang, surgeon to the Native Hospitals in Singapore, and lecturer in clinical and operative surgery to the King Edward VII Medical School. Tennant later settled in Eccles, Manchester, where he was honorary surgeon to Eccles and Patricroft Hospital.
