Sutherland, the son of a general practitioner in Ardwick, was educated at Manchester Grammar School and Owens College. He held resident appointments at MRI and Townley Hospital, Bolton, before being appointed RMO to Manchester Hospital for Consumption, Bowden, Cheshire. In 1912 he became tuberculosis officer to the City of Manchester, an appointment he held until his retirement in 1948. He worked for a number of years with Dr James Niven, the pioneer of public health, and was responsible for the creation of the Denmark Road Chest Clinic. He was later visiting consultant physician to a number of tuberculosis sanatoria in the area. He became a well known figure in the world of tuberculosis care; he was chairman of the Joint Tuberculosis Council and a founder member of the North West Tuberculosis Society. Sutherland was also lecturer in clinical tuberculosis at the University of Manchester. Sutherland died on 5 May 1961, aged 78.
