Hugh Selbourne, as he was known, was consultant physician to Ashton and District Hospital Group for thirty years. Selbourne was born in Paris on 28 February 1905, and came to England in 1914 in flight from the war. He gained his medical education at St Bartholomew's and gained academic distinction at a young age. Selbourne held house jobs at Rochester, Lewisham and Southend, before settling in general practice in Lancashire. He was later appointed consultant physician at Ashton and had a successful practice in Manchester. He died on 21 August 1973.
