Patrick Rabbitt was educated at Cambridge University, where he studied psychology, He held academic appointments at Cambridge and Oxford Universities, before becoming professor of psychology at Durham University from 1981-1983. In 1983 he was appointed research professor in gerontology and cognitive psychology at the University of Manchester, and Director of the Age and Cognitive Performance Research Centre.
