Smith was a dental surgeon practising in Manchester from the 1860s, he was dental surgeon to MRI from 1873 until his retirement in 1897. He was a member of Manchester Medical Society and an early member of the Odontological Society of London. He died on 19 December 1908, leaving a legacy to MRI.
