Sankey was born on 18 February 1875, the son of a soap manufacturer, and gained his medical education at Owens College. He was house surgeon at Ancoats Hospital before entering general practice in Manchester. After serving in the RAMC in Alexandria and France, Sankey was appointed anaesthetist to MRI, Ancoats Hospital and Grangethorpe Orthopaedic Hospital. He was later consultant anaesthetist to Altrincham General Hospital, Ancoats Hospital and Stretford Memorial Hospital, and anaesthetist to Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. Sankey method for administering anaesthetic became known as the 'Sankey method'. Sankey died on 25 July 1964.
