Sutherland gained his medical education in Glasgow and Edinburgh and at Guy's Hospital. He was house surgeon in Carlisle before holding a succession of military appointments, serving in the Boer War and in France during the first world war. He was later medical superintendent to Monsall Hospital and clinical lecturer of infectious diseases at the University of Manchester. He was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. Sutherland carried on his connection with the military until 1934.Sutherland wrote a history of Monsall Hospital.
