Thomson gained his medical education at the University of Manchester. Thomson was house surgeon at Queen Charlotte's Maternity Hospital London, which saw the beginnings of a successful career in obstetrics and gynaecology. He served as a captain in the RAMC specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology and held obstetric appointments at Queen Charlotte's and at Dundee Teaching Hospitals. Thomson then returned to Manchester as obstetric and gynaecological registrar to St Mary's Hospital and soon after, lecturer in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University. Thomson was later consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology to Wigan and Leigh Hospital Group. He was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and Manchester Medical Society, and a member of the North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society.
