Frederic Westmacott studied medicine at Owens College Manchester and received the conjoint diploma in 1890. He worked at several Manchester Hospitals, before travelling to Burma. He later studied ENT at Vienna, before returning to Manchester where he built up the St. John's Hospital for the Ear. In 1913 Westmacott was elected to the honorary staff of the MRI, working in the ENT department. Westamacott was active in the Volunteers and the Territorial Army. During the First World War, he commanded the 2nd Western General Hospital from 1915-7, the largest military hospital in the country.
