Wertheim was born in Vienna and took his medical degree at Vienna University. He worked as a dermatologist until 1938, when he fled Austria. Wertheim came to Britain and gained British medical qualifications. He worked as a GP in Ashton-under-Lyne, and was a part-time consultant dermatologist at Crumpsall and Booth Hall Hospitals, Manchester.
