Talbot studied medicine at Owens College, where he gained a number of academic distinctions. He held resident appointments at MRI, Ashton-under-Lyne District Infirmary and Ancoats Hospital. During the War, Talbot was a captain in the RAMC, serving as surgical specialist in Baghdad. He was later honorary surgeon to Ashton-under-Lyne District Infirmary. Talbot was a member of Manchester Medical Society and Manchester Surgical Society.
